The Client

JDS Energy & Mining Inc. provides extensive energy and mining services focused in Northern Canada and has even implemented projects around the globe.

The Brief

JDS Energy & Mining Inc. operates multiple mines in the Yukon Territory. The most efficient way to transport materials to these mines is through the Yukon River. JDS Energy & Mining was looking for a vessel capable of transportation via roadways to remote sites as well as maneuvering safely and efficiently through the shallow waters of the Yukon River while pushing shallow draft deck barges. CMDL created  a customized and modular tug to fulfill its client’s needs while adapting to challenging work environments.

The Design

The 12m Shallow Draft Tug’s key aspects are its truck-able compatibility, lightweight design, and efficiency.

The tug, of steel construction, has been designed to limit the draft to an exceptionally low value of 2’10’’, allowing it to maneuver in 3’-4’ water. The vessel is comprised of a unique removable wheel-house and deck-house accompanied by a 40’ x 28’ steel hull which splits into two along the center line of the vessel, allowing it to be disassembled for transportation by truck to remote worksites.

The tug is powered by four John Deere 6069 AFM 85, marine diesel engines rated 230 hp @2300 rpm. The vessel is fitted with four Nautican High efficiency nozzles and four Triple high Aspect Ratio Nautican High Efficiency rudders for great maneuverability. An advanced Keel Cooled (RW Fernstorm – copper nickel cooler) machinery cooling system installed on the sideshell of the tug with independent coolers for each of the four engines and generator. In order to ensure the safety of the crew and the cargo, the tug has been designed for compliance with all relevant intact and damage stability standards.

Accommodations for three is provided in the deck-house. The compact wheelhouse is dedicated for piloting. To safely operate the tug a minimum of two crew members are required on board. The vessel is designed for a 24 hour endurance at full power and outfitted for a minimum three day crew endurance operating between dawn and dusk.
